When it comes to wedding planning, you really need two things going for you: Time and Preparation.   If you begin your preparation well in advance of your wedding date, then wedding planning won’t be so stressful…you’ll have plenty of time to order your wedding invitations and other wedding cards [mom or sis, that could mean YOU ordering some cards for the bridal shower], as well as your wedding favors [of course you’ll want to make your guest list as quickly as possible, being as thorough as you can, but you realize other names will be added as you go, so you’ll probably want to consult with a professional planner for recommended numbers in over-ordering, or at least someone with experience with wedding planning—maybe someone who has or does work in a wedding or print shop.

If your wedding is going to very formal, then—of course—you’ll need even more time if you need to reserve your venue.  Depending on your religious preferences and how popular your particular, chosen, location is, this should be the very first thing you should take care of above all else.  Most likely, though, you’ve been dreaming of one particular place for a long time, and have probably gotten some idea how far in advance to secure your church, synagogue, or posh hotel, arboretum, or wherever.

One thing is for certain: DON’T TRY TO PLAN YOUR WEDDING ALL BY YOUR SELVES! If it’s just the two of you…if neither of you have parents or aunts or grandmothers, etc, to help you with details, perhaps you can ask for the wisdom and advice of the mother of, say, your bridesmaid.  It will surely be a godsend if you have the experience of someone who has “gone there before” to guide you along.  But you can get a head start on details!  Start with date and place; brainstorm your first-draft guest list, browse for wedding invitations and wedding favors and order those [or have someone order those for you], and next you’ll want to settle on theme, attire, etc.

If you’ve got Time and Preparation on your side, your wedding planning should work out well.
